Where would you call HOME

I have been to many places, seen so many faces, but nothing comes close to being home. Where do I consider as home? Lets see, I was born in Bombay, India. Then moved around India from North to South. My family then decided to moved to the United States. We moved to Los Angeles, CA where I did my high school and college. I was just about to call it home, when work came knocking and made me move to Columbus, Ohio. I've been here for the past two years and in my mind I constantly question myself, as far as where do I consider as home, LA or Columbus. If you had a choice between LA or Columbus, where would you choose to live and call home??

In Poetics of Space, Gaston Bachelard has examined metaphysical conceptions of home, claming it to be "one of the greatest powers of integration for the thoughts, memories and dreams of mankind". It thus plays a crucial role in the ordering of a coherent subjectivity: "without it, man would be a dispersed being".

If money were no option, LA, but maybe more south in Orange County/Anaheim. We visited LA just before class. My cousin lives 2 blocks from the beach in Newport, but hates the fact that he can never find a parking spot. My other cousin lives near Knotts. It's pretty quiet there and they enjoy the surburban life. My aunt and uncle live across the street from Disneyland. I have other relatives up in the desert north of LA and some in Redlands. What an awesome place to live anywhere there though. Although traffic, parking, crime, air quality, and many other things suck a whole lot, it's still sunny California. Surfing and Snow Skiing 45 minutes apart. Can't beat it. But $$$$$$$ keeps me here.

I would love to call San Diego home. However, Columbus has a lot of perks the cost of living is much more affordable, my family is here, and I enjoy the change of seasons. Columbus is my home.

I have visited LA and did not enjoy it too much, actually, although I do love other parts of California. Columbus isn't my favorite place ever, but it's good enough for the foreseeable future!

Hey Raj,
I think home is what feels right to you and your wife. I can see many things you would miss about California. (we don't see many movie stars here) Many have said Columbus is a nice place to raise a family... affordable housing and good schools. Even our traffic isn't bad, although public transportation systems could be better. Thankfully, expensive housing keeps more people from moving to CA - otherwise the traffic and parking would be even crazier. I would imagine LA is closer to the diversity and crowds of Bombay than Columbus is.

I haven't been to LA and I'm new to Columbus, so I can only say that home is a place where you feel happy to live your life.

I completely agree with all your views in regards to LA.

Jeffrey, money is definitely a major issue with most of the people wanting to move to LA.

Cat, San Deigo is beautifull, the beach the people the tan and ofcourse SEAWORLD.

Charise, I don't blame you for not enjoying your experience in LA. It is very fast paced, people minding their own business, stuck in that gridlock tracffic. Trying to make a living in LA is not easy. I myself prefer the mid-west surrounding. Its nice to see people that acknowledge one another.

Jim, OC is really nice place in southern cal. I personally like Santa Barbara, it is a college town, just like columbus, but surrounded by the beach. Imagine that, wakingup to the sunrise and going to bed seeing the sunset.

Sameer my friend, you are so right about 'home is a place where you feel happy to live your life'. I personally like the quote 'home is where your heart is'.

Raj-

Tough question! I was seriously considering moving to California a couple years ago. My boyfriend and I went on a trip to San Diego and fell in love with it. I am an outdoorsy person and love nothing more than going to the beach on a beautiful day. In San Diego, the weather is beautiful and I could go to the beach every day! However, as some others mentioned, the cost of living is so extremely high in CA. I ended up staying put in Ohio because I didn't think I could afford to live as comfortably out west. I could see myself moving there at some point in the future in my finances allow for it. If nothing else, it's a great place to visit!
